দুপুর পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করে কুসুমের মা কুসুমের বাবাকে বললেন, আমি তো পিঁয়াজ মরিচ কেটে রেখেছিলাম, কেউ তো গোশত পাঠালো না! প্রতিবেশীরা আমাদের কথা ভুলে গেলো না তো ? আপনি কি একটু গিয়ে দেখবেন? কুসুমের বাবাঃ তুমি তো জানো আজ পর্যন্ত কারো কাছে আমি হাত পাতিনি আল্লাহ তায়ালা অবশ্যই কোন না কোন ব্যবস্থা করে দেবেন। দুপুরের পর পীড়াপীড়িতে বের না হয়ে পারলেন না। প্রথম গেলেন বড় সাহেবের বাড়ীতে। বললেন,বড় সাহেব! আমি আপনার পড়শী। কিছু গোশত দেবেন ? গোশত চাইতেই বড় সাহেবের চেহারা গোস্বায় লাল হয়ে গেল। তাচ্ছিল্যের সাথে বললেন, কি জানি কোত্থেকে গোশত চাইতে চলে আসে-বলেই ধরাম করে দরজা বন্ধ করে দিলেন। অপমানে কুসুমের বাবার চোখে পানি চলে আসলো। ভারী পায়ে চলতে চলতে এবার গেলেন মিঁয়া সাহেবের ঘরের দিকে, দরজায় করাঘাত করে বিনীতভাবে কিছু গোশত চাইলেন। মিঁয়া সাহেব গোশতের কথা শুনেই বিরক্তিভরে তাকালেন, পলিথিনে কয়েক টুকরো গোশত দিয়ে দ্রুত দরজা বন্ধ করে দিলেন। যাক ছোট মেয়েটাকে তো একটা বুঝ দেয়া যাবে, এমনটা ভাবতে ভাবতে কুসুমের বাবা ঘরে ফিরে এলেন। ঘরে ফিরে পলিথিন খুলে দেখলেন শুধু দুটো হাড্ডি আর চর্বি। চুপচাপ রুমে গিয়ে কাঁদতে লাগলেন। এরই মধ্যে ছোট কুসুম বাবাকে জড়িয়ে ধরে বলল, বাবা ! গোশত লাগবে না। আমি গোস্ত খাবো না, আমার পেট ব্যাথা করছে। মেয়ের একথা শুনে বাবা আর চাপা কান্না ধরে রাখতে পারলেন না। এমন সময় বাইরে থেকে সবজি বিক্রেতা আকরাম ভাই ডাক দিলো। কুসুমের বাপ ঘরে আছেন ? কুসুমের আব্বু দরজা খুলতেই আকরাম ভাই তিন- চার কেজি গোশতের একটি ব্যাগ হাতে নিয়ে বলল, গ্রাম থেকে ছোট ভাই নিয়ে এসেছে। এতো গোশত কি একা খাওয়া সম্ভব, বলেন? এটা আপনারা খাবেন। আনন্দ আর কৃতজ্ঞতায় কুসুমের বাবা ভেজা চোখ মুছতে লাগলেন। অন্তর থেকে আকরামের জন্য দোয়া করতে লাগলেন। গোশত রান্না করে সবাই মজা করে খেয়ে উঠতে না উঠতেই প্রচন্ড তুফান শুরু হলো। বিদ্যুৎও চলে গেল। সারাদিন গেল, এমনকি দ্বিতীয় দিনও বিদ্যুৎ এলো না তুফানে ট্রান্সমিটার জ্বলে গিয়েছিলো । কুসুমের বাবা তৃতীয় দিন কুসুমকে নিয়ে হাঁটতে বের হলেন। বাবা-মেয়ে দেখলো, বড় সাহেব ও মিঁয়া সাহেব গোশতে ভরা অনেকগুলো পোঁটলা ডাস্টবিনে ফেলছেন। বিদ্যুৎ না থাকায় ফ্রিজে থাকা সব গোশত নষ্ট হয়ে গিয়েছে। ফেলে দেয়া পঁচা গোশতের উপর একদল কুকুরকে হামলে পড়তে দেখে কুসুম বলল, বাবা তারা কি .... কুকুর
